Works of art that involve masks and/or costumes:
- James Ensor, The Intrigue (1890): The Belgian artist was obsessed with masquerades, often depicting crowds and mass gatherings in eerie and perverse fashion. He especially loved colorful festivities with a macabre or pagan feel, such as Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Carnival.
- James Ensor, Man of Sorrows (1892): the face of suffering Christ depicted as if superimposed with a Japanese Noh mask of a demon (Oni), such as the scary Shikami mask (artist: Deme Yukan, 16th cent., early Edo period).
- Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), Detail of Les Demoiselles and African mask used by Picasso: one of Picasso's most famous paintings, it caused all the outrage when it was first released to the public. At the time it was seen as scary and ugly, and Picasso's defacing women with african masks had something to do with it.

- This interesting site displays "diptychs" of African masquerades in comparison with eccentric fashion artists using masks in somewhat similar ways.
- For non-Western art history and ethnography, this site diplays a wide variety of traditional ceremonial masks from all over the world.
